Ultra vs. Flow

(5 Things I Couldn't Ignore When Comparing)

At first glance, Ultra and Flow seem similar. Both nicotine-free. Both designed to help you lock in. Both a pouch. But after some deep research, I realized they couldn't be more different. Here's what I found.

Ultra vs Flow comparison

Flow Is Built Around Meaningful Doses. Ultra, Not So Much.

When I first came across Flow and Ultra, I was looking to switch to a nicotine-free pouch, to help me quit zyns. Here's what I wanted: To keep the pouch habit I like. To keep the energy, focus, and brainpower I need. To be free of the addiction I hate. And to use something that's better for me.

So first, I dug into the Supplement Facts Panels of each product. I discovered that Ultra is built around one central stimulant:

  • Paraxanthine

And then "supported by" (check the dosing chart):

  • Alpha GPC
  • L-Theanine
  • Panax Ginseng
Supplement comparison
Ingredient Ultra's Dose Industry Standard Doses
Paraxanthine 100mg 100-300mg
Alpha GPC 30mg 300-1,200mg
L-Theanine 10mg 100-200mg
Panax Ginseng 1mg 200-400mg

Flow, on the other hand, is built around functional mushrooms:

  • Lion's Mane
  • Cordyceps
  • Reishi

And then supported by:

  • TeaCrine®
Ingredient Flow's Dose Industry Standard Doses
Lion's Mane (10:1 extract) 120mg extract (1,200mg equivalent raw mushroom) 500-3,000mg fruiting body or equivalent
Cordyceps (10:1 extract) 60mg extract (600mg equivalent raw mushroom) 500-1,500mg
Reishi (10:1 extract) 60mg extract (600mg equivalent raw mushroom) 500-1,500mg
TeaCrine® 60mg 50-300mg

All said and done, it's obvious Flow was meaningfully dosed, whereas Ultra seems to be driven by one stimulant ingredient, Paraxanthine, then contains sprinkles of other supporting ingredients just to say they're in there.

I don't like feeling fooled. And this discovery didn't sit well with me.

Flow's Energy Is Naturally Derived. Ultra's Energy Is Synthetic.

This is where the formulas really start to differ. Because ingredients aren't just ingredients. They create an experience. And personally, I don't want to feel wired. I don't want jitters. Or a huge spike followed by a crash. I don't want to feel like I need another hit three hours later.

What attracted me to Flow was that the formula isn't built around a single stimulant. Instead, it combines functional mushrooms, TeaCrine®, and methylcobalamin B12. Lion's Mane is known for its natural brain boosting properties. Cordyceps is known to promote energy and stamina. Reishi is known to support stress and sleep.

So the goal with Flow feels different. Sustained focus. Steady energy. Ultra feels like it was designed to maximize stimulation. I wanted something I could comfortably use every day. For my goals, there isn't much of a comparison here…

The Type of B Vitamins Matter

Okay, I almost missed this. Because B vitamins are B vitamins, right? Wrong. Ultra uses cyanocobalamin. Flow uses methylcobalamin.

Two different forms of vitamin B12. Both are legit. But methylcobalamin is considered the more premium option because it's already in its active form. That means your body doesn't have to convert it before using it. So it's considered more bioavailable. It's also the form naturally found in foods. And frankly, it's more expensive to use in a formula.

So by choosing methylcobalamin, Flow opted for the more premium, aka, more expensive B vitamin. And yet they still keep their cost lower than Ultra (but again, more on that later). Most people would never dig this deep to realize the difference.

But it matters. So does the experience. Now let's talk taste.

Taste Also Matters, A Lot

If I'm going to throw in a pouch multiple times a day, I'd better enjoy it. Flat out, paraxanthine is known to be bitter tasting. So it's probably really tough to make it taste good in a pouch. I'd give Ultra a 6/10 on taste. They're not repulsive. But also, not exactly enjoyable.

Yes, they have 5 flavor options. I tried a few. But even strong sweeteners like sucralose and xylitol can only do so much to mask the bitterness of a stimulant-heavy formula. And while plenty of brands use them, they're not really ingredients I go out of my way to consume.

Sucralose is an artificial sweetener. Xylitol is a sugar alcohol that can cause digestive discomfort for some people when consumed in larger amounts. Neither one particularly bothers me. But they also aren't considered "clean."

Flow is sweetened with allulose, a naturally occurring sweetener found in small amounts in fruits like figs, and other foods.

Taste comparison

And, I've gotta say, Flow Pouches actually taste really good. 9/10 at least. Maybe 9.5/10 even. They're subtle. Not sickly sweet or overpowering. And they come in 6 flavor options you can get individually in or a variety pack:

  • Wintergreen
  • Cool Mint
  • Citrus
  • Blue Razz
  • Sour Apple
  • Black Cherry

Tbh, this one also wasn't even close.

Ultra Delivers Less but Costs More

Flow delivers 20 pouches per can at roughly $0.49 per pouch.

Ultra delivers 15 pouches per can at roughly $0.80 per pouch.

That's about 63% more per pouch for a formula primarily built around a single stimulant ingredient. I go through about 20 pouches a day, so cost adds up. And when you factor in everything I've covered…

There just isn't much of a value comparison. Because, if it matters to you, with Flow, you're getting premium ingredients. No fillers, no junk. Natural ingredients.

Cost value comparison
  • Calm energy
  • Smooth focus
  • No jitters
  • No crash

At a lower price point. They didn't cut a single corner. Looking at the ingredients, dosages, pouch count, and price point, I was genuinely surprised by the value. With Ultra you're getting commercially manufactured synthetic ingredients, right down to the sweeteners. And less per can. Yet they're more expensive.

It just doesn't add up.

So Which Would I Actually Use Every Day?

Ultimately, I'm going Flow.

To sum it up neatly, here's why:

Flow Ultra
20 pouches per can 15 pouches per can
$.49 per pouch $.80 per pouch
Functional mushrooms Synthetic stimulant
TeaCrine® Paraxanthine
Methylcobalamin B12 Cyanocobalamin B12
Allulose Sucralose + Xylitol
Fruiting body mushroom extracts Stimulant-driven formula
Made in America Made in Denmark
Naturally derived ingredient philosophy Engineered performance ingredient philosophy

Natural matters to me. Or, maybe it's that synthetic stimulants turn me off. It also matters to me that it actually works. But I don't want to feel like I'm crawling out of my skin.

I want calm energy. Smooth focus. Productivity, but not off-the-wall energy that makes me crave another hit. Something to power me through that 2pm crash. Something to help me lock in for workouts. Just an edge. Something to help replace the zyn habit, without the suffering.

Flow delivers. And without feeling like I was trading one vice for another. When I started this deep dive, I wanted freedom from addiction. Not a new dependency.

I wanted quality. Premium ingredients. Yet still affordable for my lifestyle. Flow aligns with that. Gotta say, it surpassed my expectations.

It's Flow for me.

If you're trying to quit nicotine, keep the pouch ritual, and still get the focus and energy you're after, I'd say Flow is the better buy.
